The Problem??
Gingie, the gingerbread boy was loose in the school. What could we do? He can't be running around the school, especially when he was so mischievous at night. He would knock over chairs, put paper on the floor, and even sent us pictures from his escapades!
The Solution?
The students decided they needed to make a trap. The students worked together to figure out what size boxes they wanted, how they wanted to decorate the box, and even chose the location of there to put the trap based on the pictures Gingie sent of places in the school he had visited. No rulers or tape measures used. The students (with little adult guidance) used classroom items similar to the size of the gingerbread boy to estimate what size trap they would need.
Two students worked together as a team to build a trap that looked like a "candy house" because "that is what he lived in, in the story" (KR, age 8). Another student worked on his own to create a trap with a whole in the middle so "he could fall right down". He even placed a lego near the whole so that it would trick the gingerbread boy into his trap.
