Web Tools
There are so many amazing web tools out there that I wish there was more time to explore them with the students. Although many of the students have significant learning challenges, the use of technologies can help "level the playing field". In the past, the technologies used were usually 'specialized programs'. Now with new web tools coming out each day, the need for 'specialized programs' is decreasing as the tools can be used to support all learners.
Prezi
Helping sequence using Prezi on the IWB.
The students used Prezi (online presentation tool) to sequence the story The Jacket I Wear in the Snow. I created the template that included the images that we used to support the text as well as in extension activities. The students took turns coming to the SmartBoard to "draw the path". We would periodically check the sequence and students gave input on if it was wrong or right. Click HERE to check out the Prezi.
As an extension to this activity, I used the Prezi to create a narrated animation (by screencasting the Prezi and reading book) so that the students could see the finished product, explore the finished product independently, and enjoy the book! Click HERE to see the screencast AKA video of the book being read.

Glogster
Click above for more info about our blogs.
As an ending project, the students created their own animal "glog". The students chose an animal and did research on the animal to complete a fact file sheet. This was done with some adult assistance for internet and book research.
After all research was completed, the students began creating their "glogs" with the help of a couple 5th grade "tech buddies". Although my students can navigate the computers somewhat independently, for this project they were going to have use laptops AND access common folders on our school drive which they had no experience with. Initially, the classroom assistants were going to help the students until I talked with a colleague/ We thought the "tech buddies" would be a win-win for each of the students.
The "glogs" turned out great!! The "tech buddies" allowed the students to be creative and strictly stuck to being "helpers" and not "doers". After the "glogs" were finished, each student gave a presentation on their animal to the class.
