Creating with Mobile Technology
In order to engage the students beyond the rote facts and knowledge of the curriculum themes, having the students create something versus just tell has always played a part within the classroom. With the increase of using mobile technology (mainly iPads) within the classroom, it provides an additional opportunity for creation.
Below you will find a couple examples of how the students have used various apps to move beyond circling the answer or coloring a picture.

Charlotte's Web
As part of the Global Read Aloud event 2012, our classroom read and discussed the book Charlotte's Web. Discussion of the story characters, such as identifying animals and recognizing names, was one of the main focuses. Instead of just having the students tell their favorite character or color a picture of their favorite character, the students used an iOS communication app called Answers YES NO to tell who was their favorite character. Next, they used another iOS app called TypeDrawing create a visual that represented their favorite character.
In addition to the characters, we also focused on the words that Charlotte would write into the webs that would describe Wilbur. Since the students always need to work on name recognition and name writing, we decided to create our own name webs. The name webs were created using an iOS app called Skitch. The slideshow below displays the students' creations of the name webs and the character graphics..
